Odor Eliminators: products widely available today

How to Eliminate Cat Urine Odor in Carpeting, Upholstery, Leather, etc.

We are constantly contacted about the frustration surrounding the problem of cat pee stains and urine odors in carpeting and upholstery so we thought that we would address the application methods here. This is not just from our household customer's but also our professional customer's like carpet cleaners, housekeeping services, etc. So don't feel bad... but if you follow these steps we guarantee that your life will return to normal.

Treating urine odors utilizing carpet cleaning or steam cleaning:
It is always recommended that you first treat all of the urine affected areas with ForceOut BEFORE you get your carpet cleaned.
If this is not done it could make matters worse because the heat or steam can re-awaken and spread the salt urine crystals throughout the carpet fibers and padding. It might seem that the urine odor is gone momentarily but, in many cases, when it dries the odor will start coming back once the weather gets warm and humid. 

If you have already cleaned your carpet or had it steam-cleaned and the odor is back: It's possible that the dried urine crystals have been spread across a larger area than you previously thought. To locate these area's, we recommend the use of a Black Light. It is recommended that these area's be treated liberally with ForceOut. Another option is to add straight ForceOut to a carpet cleaning reservoir and clean the whole carpet area. The amount of ForceOut needed will depend on the size of the carpet being treated.

General Treatment and Use Instructions for Surfaces:

• The first step in any odor problem is finding the source - the areas that harbor cat urine odor must be found. ForceOut is a contact formula so it must make contact with the odor source to neutralize the odor causing compounds. A black light can be used for this procedure. First darken the room and wave the black light over the affected surfaces. When it detect's dried urine it will flouresce or glow by beaming a dull yellow color. Be prepared to see many stains glow because many soaps and detergents will leave a residue that will glow bright white or bluish white. If you aren't sure of the color your looking for - just take the black light into a darkened bathroom and look around the toilet. No matter how clean your bathrrom is you should be able to find a small area of the dried urine crystals.
  Another way to detect the urine stains is to look at the shape and location. Since we are talking about cat's here and they tend to spray in some instances, be sure to check all baseboards and walls also.
  Once this area is detected you can look at the following application methods.
• For Carpeting: This is by far the most common problem associated with cat urine odor problems. Unfortunately, most people just spray the surface of the carpet and walk away but if the cat urine has seeped into the carpet padding, carpet backing, or the sub-floor that application method isn't going to work. Always remember that if a person already cleaned the top of the carpet surface before you realized the problem (many new homeowner's usually are faced with this), it will be very hard to detect. In this scenario, we recommend that people pull back their carpeting to help in the detection and treatment process. To treat this problem completely, the urine stained area's must come in contact with the ForceOut formula to destroy the urine odor. If this is the case, either use ForceOut in a carpet cleaning machine or saturate the area completely to make sure that ForceOut has come into contact with the affected area. If you use a carpet cleaning machine, you can extract the excess ForceOut formula after letting it sit for about 5-10 minutes to expedite the drying process. The use of a fan or blower will ensure that no moisture builds up in the padding or the backing. Always make sure to let the area completely dry.
• Carpeting & Subfloor: If the cat urine has penetrated into the subfloor (usually plywood or chip board) or the area has been neglected for an extended period of time (also see Hardwood Floors below). You can also add a teaspoon of dishwahing soap to about 16 oz. of ForceOut and then saturate the area. This will allow the odor elimination formula to breakdown any oily build up associated with the urine and subfloor compounds. Always make sure to dry the area with a fan or blower so the subfloor or any damp area's can't provide a breeding ground for mildew and mold.
• For Upholstery: Treat the same as above but as stated; make sure to inspect the area thoroughly. If the urine odor has penetrated into the foam or padding of the furniture, make sure to saturate the odor area with ForceOut. Let completely dry. You can also use an upholstery syringe to shoot the odor eliminator into the foam padding. Completely dry.
• For Leather: ForceOut is safe to use on leather for urine stains and odors because it is a water-based formula. But make sure to proceed with caution and check in an inconspicuos spot first because some leathers are dyed by different manufacturing processes that could react (especially if you used another odor removal product first). Just spray on an absorbent cloth and firmly blot the area. Let dry completely and remember to moisturize the leather when you have achieved the necessary result.
• Note About Carpet Pads: We have been informed that there are some new carpet paddings on the market that actually work as a moisture barrier. From all reports this padding is made of a plastic resin compound that actually absorbs the cat urine (or any urine) and makes it very difficult to get out because the urine impregnates into the plastic itself. It has been our experience that only trial and error will work on these surfaces.
• Hardwood Floors: Dried cat urine is very tough on hardwood floors so it is important to understand the composition of the urine. When urine dries it leaves behind uric acid salt crystals, which left for an extended period, can literally etch its way into the wood over time. If this happens you will notice a stained black area in the wood. This area can still be harboring those nasty urine odors so treat with ForceOut as directed. If you treat the blackened stained area, you should see it lighten and become grayish in color but it will not be able to be restored. Only a sanding will get the color out totally.
• Litter Box Odors: ForceOut can be used in the surrounding area's of the litter box by just spraying it in the air. If the urine odor is emanating from the litter itself just spray over the litter box and let gravity spread ForceOut for you. It's completely safe for you and your cat(s) and because it's ODORLESS - it won't repel them to pee somewhere else, later.
